Storage Space Direct - Windows Server 2019 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody!

i want to evaluate and test the StorageSpaceDirect Features in my Lab Enviroment.

The following error message was displayed in Powershell:

Enable-ClusterStorageSpacesDirect : Microsoft recommends deploying SDDC on WSSD
[https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/software-defined-datacenter] certified hardware offerings for production environments. The WSSD offerings will be pre-validated on Windows Server 2019 in the coming months. In the meantime, we are making the SDDC bits available early to Windows Server 2019 Insiders to allow for testing and evaluation in preparation for WSSD certified hardware becoming available. Customers interested in upgrading existing WSSD environments to Windows Server 2019 should contact Microsoft for recommendations on how to proceed. Please call Microsoft support [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4051701/global-customer-service-phone-numbers].

I researched and found many blog posts. You can seemingly turn off this warning and still evaluate it. However does the support have to be contacted?

Do you know anything about this?

    Thank you a lot!

  • Hello!

You can follow the options listed in the KB article below:

Software Defined Data Center and Software Defined Networking in Windows Server 2019

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464776/software-defined-data-center-and-software-defined-networking

    You have the following options:

    • Use the Insider edition to evaluate Windows Server 2019. There is no advisory message or registry key required for the Insider edition.

    • If you have a tight project deadline, features such as SDN or Storage Spaces Direct are available for immediate deployment in Windows Server 2016. There are significant added capabilities and improvements in Windows Server 2019. However, the core functionality is comparable. There are more than 45 validated WSSD offers available today for Windows Server 2016.

    • If you meet the requirements in the “Required” section, such as using parts that have the Windows Server 2019 logo and the  SDDC AQs, you can deploy SDN or Storage Spaces Direct in Windows Server 2019 in a production environment even before the first WSSD-validated hardware ships in mid-January. You will be eligible for a free non-decremented case from Microsoft Product Support. For more details about how to upgrade existing WSSD environments to Windows Server 2019, contact Microsoft Support.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • By Default S2D feature will not enable in Windows Server 2019. So to fix this you have to add a RegKey to enable it.

    New-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ClusSvc\Parameters" -Name S2D -Value 1 -PropertyType DWORD -Force

    Best regards
