Issue with Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade from Vista Ultimate

Question
-
Aloha All
I upgraded one of our test laptops from Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, I had a couple of issues installing the straight upgrade.
The last issue I have is that during the update I was never prompted for a key, now when I go to the Control Panel/System I see that I have 27 days for the windows activation, however when I click on the Activate Windows now or If I click on the change product Key link under the Windows Activation page the O.S does nothing... I do have 3 licensed keys but the system does not even prompt me to enter any key.
I also booted in safe mode and was unable to change the key......
I've also run repair from the installation CD, does anyone know how to solve this issue or how to change the key in any other way...
Regards

hi
if you have genuine OS vista and done a free upgrade to 7 you can activate directly, in safe mode activation is not allowed
if you want to install product key (licensed one)
type cmd in start menu search run as administrator
C:\windows\system32\
assuming that you installed in c drive
type C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
(product key)
press enter wait for confirmation dialog, if it is a valid key it installs successfully
activate it under Control Panel/System,
hope it helps

Slui.exe is the interface that pops up with dialogs such as "enter your key" or "sucessfully activated". You can run it directly:
Running "Slui.exe 3" will prompt you for a key. Command = "%systemdrive%\windows\system32\Slui.exe 3"
Additionaly if the proper key is already installed you may try activation with slmgr.vbs. Command = "%systemdrive%\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato" which will return an error code if not succsesfull. Post it here.- Marked as answer by Vivian Xing Wednesday, November 11, 2009 5:58 AM

Aloha Nik
Thanks for the info, Here is what happened.
1-Logged in as Administrator
2-Updated the key following your instructions
3-Received a popup indicating that the key was successfully changed
However when I go to the control panel and look at the windows activation it still says that I have 27 days to activate, the product key did change on the system. So it looks like I still have the same issue that I had... The license that I have is a licensed key and I can't understand why it does not allow me to change the key or even to change the product key while I'm in the control panel.

hi
just restart once
the new key also has to be activated in 27 days it seems
when you click on activate windows now, tell me whats the process it takes and what it shows at next stepTuesday, November 10, 2009 3:51 AM -
Drew
This is a MSDN / Technet legal copy for some reason it will not activate.Tuesday, November 10, 2009 3:52 AM -
Nik
I restarted but if I click on the Activate Windows Now The computer does not do anything. I'm actually watching the task manager to see what process opens and it looks like no processes change when I try to activate windows.
It feels like something is preventing the activation from happening.

If slui.exe is running with no interface there may be file corruption. This can happen if you have a language pack installed and/or if the .mui file is not present or connected. To remedy this you try this commnd: "sfc /scannnow" - system file integrity checker will scan your files and replace any if needed. You can also check inside "%systemdrive%windows\system32\en-us" substituting 'en-us' for the language you are currently using and search for "slui.exe.mui" to verify that the file is present. Best of luck.Tuesday, November 10, 2009 4:50 AM

Aloha Mr Steven..
I tun the sfc/scannow and it indicated that the system "did not find any integrity violations" I also have the language set to en-us when I had vista I has installed the spanish language support but always kept the system on en-us setting.
Weird...
Again thanks for all the help, I just hope that I don't have problems down the road...thus far the system seems ok, everything runs great and it seems that the system is faster even when I set it to " low power savings setting"
Aloha
