SQL Cluster Patching practice

  • Hi Members,

I was following SQL cluster patching process generally as follows

Patch Node 2(Passive node). Switch over services to Node 2.

Patch Node 1 (Active node). Switchback services to node 1.

Now some of my team members say.

On day one we should patch Node 2. switch over services to node 2 keep  it there for 2 days.

If no issues for DB/application Patch Node 1. switch back services to Node 1.

Need to know how this process followed in industry. i never heard of this before.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Regards, AKash Pawar

  • We talked about this approach in the past but never really used it. It is better to rely on DEV/TEST environment to test the patches before rolling into Production.

Although, this approach will work the general recommendation is to have all nodes at the same patch level to avoid any issues related to patch differences.
