Foundation Architecture with one Application Server RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi,
i need to setup a SPF2013 Farm With Three-Tier Topology:

2 x Web Front (Central Admin + Web Application)
    1 x Application Server (Services)
    1 x SQL Cluster

    some questions:

    1) if my application server die my Web Front still work as expected?
    2) if my application server die my Web Front still can use search?
    3) is there a way to have Search (and generally, services) to be in HA with Foundation?

link and explanation are very apreciated :)

  • It's a cop out but 'it depends' is sadly the right answer to most of those questions.

If your Appication server goes down then it will mean any services you run on that server will not work. So if you had your MMS running on it then that would break, in turn breaking quite a few bits of behaviour on the sites for users.

If you put your search query components on the WFEs then they wll be able to let users search even if the application/crawl server is down. However foundation has a very limited version of the Search system and i don't know just how easy it is to scale it out for HA.

I think the UI and behaviour is similar to that in 2010 where you could use the GUI to scale out over multiple servers however i haven't worked much with Foundation so can't say for certain.
