lengthy boot times after addom services installation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all! As the title shows, I have an Active Directory Services problem. After doing quick check shows that all my hardware was properly detected with the exception of a pci comm card for serial ports and an external serial modem connected to that card. After installing proper drivers, the server was restarted several times to make sure the new hardware was working OK.

I then proceeded to setting the 2 NICS their proper ipv4 static addresses (1 for my lan and 1 for the internet) leaving the default values for ipv6. At this point, both NICS are connected to a lone switch with no other hardware.

Also no apps have been installed at this point. After 3-4 successfull and very fast boots, I installed Active Directory Domain Services. After that dcpromo.exe to complete the installation. No error of any sort was noted and event viewer was clean.

However after the necessary reboot, the server now takes more than 1 hour to boot. Does anybody have any idea what is causing this? Event viewer is still clean afterwards.

  • Hi all.  Sorry was gone for all this time. Have effectively changed my boot hdd for another brand and the problem is no longer there. Simple, huh??? But really cannot explain why this is so...

  • hi there,

this seems to be an interesting issue, can you check if this issue happens in safe mode with networking ?

can you let us know during what phase there is a delay ? eg : applying computer settings

make sure point the dns server to itself.

Can you remove the PCI comm card and external serial modem both and see what happens.

The only thing which is unusual in your scenario is the PCI card
and also add /sos switch to the boot.ini to see what going at the back ground.

  • Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I confirm that the same thing happens with safe mode and safe mode with networking. As for the delay it occurs during the startup screen of windows 2008 r2 rc where you have the little green bars filling at the bottom and the windows logo in the middle. This screen stays there for around 1 hour and there is no hdd activity during that time. Thanks for answering.

  • Sorry for the late reply. As I indicated above, the same thing happens during safe mode/safe mode with networking so it's unlikely it's hardware/driver related. But I will try the /sos switch tomorrow. Thanks for answering.

There's some additional data which must've come from somewhere when converting events to txt format but you can ignore these...
But the above 5 lines show you everything. Started at 06:00 and then next log comes in at 06:54. How is that? It's always after dfsrRo and dfsDriver...

  • hi there,

as syed mentioned the issue might be related with the hardware , but at this point its difficult to predict.

what are your chances of re-installing the OS ?

  • hi there,

any luck ? , i suspect the driver, but in order to know which driver is causing i would like to get a dump and analyze them , as the issue is occruing even in safe mode i would suspect some of the

    a) network driver

    b) disk driver

    c) microsoft drivers are causing the issue.

remove the PCI comm card and external serial modem both and see what happens

  • Ok have tried to remove both pci comm and external serial modem but still no improvement. I'm beginning to lose hope. I'm thinking that it has to do with the raid driver or something hdd related because of the dfs drivers...Maybe I'll have better luck with the final version.

  • thanks syed.

    Jedimaster100,

please do avoid posting in multiple forums as this tends to confusion and follow-up .

Yes you might check by removing the raid driver and check for the issue.

as in nbtlog.txt file si showing the ndproxy.sys which is NDIS file,

as a test can you disable NIC card and test the behavior ?

  • have tried disabling raid from bios and removed raid driver, still no improvement. Have tried disabling both NICs and still nothing. However, I tried something else.

I demoted the server and voila, boot time is perfectly normal. dcpromo again and pan! back to lengthy boots...

  • hi there,

this is interesting and pretty strange.

the only thing the AD would look for AFAIK is for the DNS server, if your dns server is hosted locally then there should not be considerable delay in querying.

hope you are pointing dns locally

  • well here's my NICs settings:
    LAN:
    IP: 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0
    DNS: 192.168.1.1
    internet:
    IP: 192.168.11.2/255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.11.1
    DNS: 192.168.11.1

The above gateway address 192.168.11.1 is the adsl router's ip address.

    Any ideas?

  • You should be examining the Diagnotics-Performance Operational event logs. It will attempt to note anything causing slow startup performance. Your startup delay is in kernel mode, not a user mode app, from the look of things - no user mode services have started at this point.

You should also install Performance Monitor and configure it in 'boot logging mode', then restart the server and see what the log shows.

It looks like there is a huge gap of time before we load the DFSdriver (which is installed by DCPROMO and used by the DFS service for SYSVOL referrals.). As a quick test of that theory, you can disable the DFS Server service and see if boot time improves. If not, and you run FLTMC and don't see that driver loaded, it was a red herring. It's not a real workaround if you boot fast though, as you cannot advertise as a DC if DFS is shut off. If there is a problem with dfsdriver starting, it is unlikely to be its own fault - far more likely to be third party drivers you installed later. That driver is extremely stable, used on millions of DC's worldwide, and used constantly enough that issues with it are quickly exposed. It is nearly unchanged from Win2008.

  • Hi. You've got to help me with how to do this Diagnostics-Performance Operational thing and how to install Performance Monitor in boot logging mode. I'm sorry but I can't seem to find them anywhere. Server Manager--->Diagnostics-->Performance shows no Operational option. And I can't seem to fathom where this 'boot logging mode' is in Performance Monitor.

Now, if I run FLTMC without disabling any services, it shows 0 instances for both DfsDriver and DfsrRo. Is this normal?

Also the reason that I have not tried disabling DFS Server service is that it's not there: I have DFS Namespace and DFS Replication services though. Do I need to disable both and try with FLTMC again?

  • hi there,

The very first thing you must do is download and install the Windows Performance Tools Kit (x86 for 32bit, x64 package for 64bit) - choose the "complete" option during install.

Next, open a command prompt, and type the proper command for the trace you'd like to execute:

    For boot tracing:
    CODE
xbootmgr -trace boot -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP

    For shutdown tracing:
    CODE
xbootmgr -trace shutdown -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP

    For Standby+Resume:
    CODE
xbootmgr -trace standby -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP

    For Hibernate+Resume:
    CODE
xbootmgr -trace hibernate -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP

replace C:\TEMP with any temp directory on your machine as necessary to store the output files

Ned, hope you are referring to above procedure ?

  • Ok. Tried the boot trace but had to omit -noPrepReboot as it's not available in boot trace. I think there must be a problem but let me show you the log in C:\Temp

  • hi all. Just did something else. As soon as I finished reinstalling a clean r2, I proceeded to setting the 2 nics. I did not even touch the hardware drivers. Besides only the modem driver was not installed. All other hardware was already detected by r2.

One nic 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0, no gateway, dns: 192.168.1.1 and dynamic ipv6
The other 192.168.11.2/255.255.255.0, gateway: 192.168.11.1, dns: 192.168.11.1 and dynamic ipv6

192.168.11.1 is my router which has access to the internet and 192.168.1.1 is connected to the lan switch.

After adding adds role, server was still booting normally. Tried that several times. Always fast boot.

As soon as I did a dcpromo, bang! slow boot...
    Any additional ideas?

If anybody has any ideas please let us know.

  • Hi Ivaylo,

Please list your hardware. I'm sure it must be a combo of hardware that is causing this. For my part, I've tried this on an MSI P45-Neo3 containing both an Intel ICH10/ICH10R and a JMicron JMB363 chipset as SATA controllers and a Geforce 8600GT. I've a standalone sata hdd on the JMicron as by boot drive and two SATA hdd running a raid 1. Nothing else... What about yours?

  • hi jedimaster100,

Are you still working on the issue you were having earlier ?, or is that you have pulled RC out of your environment ?

  • Nothing further has been done. I'm now waiting for the RTM release to try again... Will update this post as soon as this is done. Funny that Ivaylo has the same problem. I was thinking that since it seems most likely hardware related, we should be using at least one common hardware but Ivaylo did not reply on my question.

  • Sorry I must have missed the notification email for the thread.
I have installed it on a newly built system:
    Mothreboard:ASUS M3A76-CM
    CPU: AMD Phenom X3 (8650)
    RAM: 6GB
    Single SATA drive.
Video is onboard: ATI Radeon 3000

I have installed R1 now and the boot is still slow after installing AD but not as slow as with the R2. Currently about 15min boot time.
    Thursday, July 30, 2009 12:30 PM
  • Hi all.

Have tried out Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM now and even though the boot time is considerably faster, it is still abnormal. The same thing repeats itself: The time difference between DFSrRO and DFSDriver is now around 20 mins... a great improvement over the previous 55 mins gap.... but I think it is still abnormal. I can only conclude that it is hardware related. While I really can't do it now, my next step will be to setup a new pc with different motherboard to see what happens...
    Tuesday, August 18, 2009 6:11 AM
  • Hi Ivaylo, have you tried with R2 RTM?
    Monday, August 24, 2009 8:52 AM
  • Yes I tried and having the same problem as you, now it takes about 15 min to boot.
    Monday, August 24, 2009 3:30 PM
  • Ok, that's good to know... However, Sainath and Ivaylo, as you can see, I can't really find anything common between Ivaylo's hardware and mine... except maybe our different motherboards are using one same chipset which we'll have to isolate...

After a brief comparison between our motherboards, I see that only the onboard LAN chipset Realtek 8111C is common... Do you think it is related with our problem?

    Compared at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130180 for my MSI P45 Neo3 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131376 for Ivaylo's.

  • I encountered exactly the same problem 2 days ago, and is currently an open MSDN support incident as SRX109082654019134. There is a 20 minute and 14 second delay.

After the Kernel-General Event ID 12 (system started) there are 3 Filter Manager entries (all informational, all successfully loaded and registered Filter Manager entries.) Then the delay, then an informational Kernel-WHEA Event ID 5 (WHEA successfully initialized. 4 error sources are active, Error record format version is 10.) At the exact same second, the Filter Manager informational entry that DfsDrive has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager.

So as you can see, its difficult to tell which of the two (Kernel-WHEA, or Filter Manager regarding DfsDriver) are the culprit.

    Hardware:
    MB: MSI G31M (http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170&prod_no=1293)
    HD: WD1600AAJS - 160GB on Sata
    RAM: 4GB
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4600
NIC: Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E (built into mobo)

So it looks like I have the same NIC as the other two.

I do find it amazingly unbelievable that any process could run that early in the boot process and think that 20 minutes shouldn't allow for a time-out or progress entry in the event log. Clearly the behavior is unexpected, but given it occured in the RC and is still in the RTM it is suprising MS didn't go after the issue more aggressively with Jedimaster100 earlier. Here we are some 2 months later and now getting more reports.

    Cheers,
    Russ
    Thursday, August 27, 2009 9:52 AM
  • Hi Russ, I totally agree with you on this. Maybe MS will be releasing a patch shortly (crossing fingers!), or do you think that they are more likely to blame Realtek?
    Thursday, August 27, 2009 10:24 AM
  • Currently I have it isntalled on a machine with Realtek 8111B LAN card and it runs fine. ASUS board as well.
    Thursday, August 27, 2009 1:23 PM
  • I'm currently on hold waiting for the Setup team member to come on and try to solve this problem.

However, while waiting for them to call I did check to see if there was an updated driver for the Realtek adapter. There isn't one from MSI, nor is there anything available from Realtek to me. There is a Windows 7 driver listed on Realtek's site, and I assume that's the one that was included in the R2 RTM DVD image I used since the driver is listed as v7...(meaning 2008 R2 is using Windows 7 drivers...I believe.)

I did disable the Realtek in the BIOS, installed a D-Link adapter, and reboot the machine...the 20 minute delay was still present. So I don't really believe this is an issue with the Realtek NIC.

I'll update this again when I've done with the Setup team.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    Thursday, August 27, 2009 2:02 PM
  • Thanks for the updates guys! I understand about the NICs but then it probably means that this particular NIC is simply found in most mobos...
    Thursday, August 27, 2009 2:23 PM
  • I am having the same problem, also have a Realtek NIC. Trying to find new drivers as we speak, but if fear the worst.....

Btw i also had it installed on my girlfriends dell computer on a spare HD i had lying around, and it worked like a charm there. Boots fast and all.
    Friday, September 4, 2009 9:25 AM
  • After some blood sweat and tears i got mine running smoothly now. I reinstalled the entire server, after installation i did the following things before installing AD and running dcpromo

    - Updated my realtek driver to the latest Win 7 driver from http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
    - Update my graphics card driver (G45 chipset graphics driver in my case). I don't think this was needed but i was updating all drivers which had a newer version online so i thought i'd be thorough and do the graphics driver as well.

Then during dcpromo, when you get asked where to store the active directory files. I made sure they were installed on a drive for which i had disabled write caching. This feature couldn't be turned off on the drive i used the first time around (which was my C drive).

    Hope this helps anyone else.

Btw. I am using a Western Digital as my C drive. I am fairly certain that not being able to disable the write cache on that disk was causing all the problems.

    Friday, September 4, 2009 5:39 PM
  • Thanks! At least someone with a potential solution! Will try it right away. Have disabled write caching on my already dcpromo'ed server and installing the Realtek Win7 drivers... then will restart... Crossing fingers as I'm really fed up with always reinstalling this thing...
    Saturday, September 5, 2009 3:36 AM
  • Ok tried to disable the cache on the boot hdd where AD files are stored but it won't. Have updated the LAN driver (though, I have to admit if it was a LAN related problem, things should have gone for the better when I tried to disable both as mentioned earlier...). It remains for me then to perform a clean install (again!) to check if your solution works and again, I have to admit that I am a bit tired of doing this over... But will try it soon...
    Monday, September 7, 2009 5:55 AM
  • I am pretty sure that the HD was the problem on my end. When i tried to disable write cache on my HDD the PC went slugish as ____, and i couldn't start new programs at all. Even though there was no HDD or processor activity. Which seemed exactly what happened during boot (HDD does not seem to respond and the pc just sits there and does nothing for 30 minutes or more). Then i noticed the event log that stated that AD had tried to disable write cache on the HDD but failed. So i am pretty sure it tries that every time the service starts or something.

I dare not touch the write cache setting again, but i am pretty sure it also acts this way on a fresh install so better use another disk if you have it. Or if some MVP or Microsoft Employee knows a way to disable AD trying to turn off write caching every time, i guess that would be fine too.

[edit]Btw you could also uninstall AD and reinstall it again storing the AD data on another drive. That seems to work fine too.[/edit]

I am experiencing the same issue dcpromo fails to install at the stage it disables write cache on my C: drive boot HDD, when I try to manually disable write cache on my HDD the computer freezes and I have to perform a cold reboot.
