windows 10 start menu tile layout

    Question

  • I found the way to customize the start menu and force that start menu through Group Policy. Is there a way to customize the windows start menu tiles to either disable it or even customize the tiles to all default users who log into the computer will get those tiles? It would be ideal to push them via group policy?

If you cannot push via group policy how do you setup and customize the tiles so all users who log into the system will receive them and then if they want to remove them and customize it themselves they have the option.

  • You can create a start menu layout, export it and then import / set it for all new users.

    Exporting the layout:

    export-StartLayout -Path C:\tmp\start.xml
    Import the layout :
    Import-StartLayout –LayoutPath \\domaincontroller\netlogon\Desktops\StartMenuBasis.xml -MountPath $env:SystemDrive\

The users can edit the layout self, but this will give them a nice basis to start with.

  • Hi,

With the command Ruud provided, please write into batch file.

Then use task scheduler to run the batch file according to the Logon events.

Choose Trigger as When I log on

  • I have exported the layout settings from one system and imported them all as a test on another system but the main issue I have is it is not bringing over the tile menu I setup. So how do you set the system when you export the start menu it will also bring the tile layout you have setup as well?

Have you tried logging on as a different user? I find when importing a start menu that it won't show after setup, but if I were to log on as a different account then it will show.

  • It will only work for new users that login. You can't change the start menu anymore for users that already have a profile on the machine. (it was possible, before the anniversary update: http://lazyadmin.nl/it/update-change-start-menu-layout-windows-10-pro-for-existing-users/)
