My 2012 R2 servers are not receiving updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Everyone,

First of all, thank you for reading at this lines, i have an issue with the 2012 R2 servers at one of the facilities i am accountable for, those servers are not receiving any updates, other servers 2003 and 2008 are receiving updates properly, as well as the workstations, the way we have our WSUS environment configured is this, we have a master upstream WSUS server in Texas, and some replicas all over the country, the one replica that is not distributing the 2012 updates is in California, all network is ok, proof of that is that it distributes the 2003 and 2008 updates without a problem.

I have already applied KB2734608and 2720211  to this replica server in California and still no luck.

This is what I have from the WindowsUpdate.log

  • recommend u install the following updates on your wsus server

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2828185
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2938066

u may also have to reset one of your 2012 clients to get it to talk to wsus again:

    Net stop wuauserv
    rd /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\
    Net start wuauserv

  • no errors, it's just saying it found no new updates

are you getting any errors when checking for updates on the GUI of the servers?

i'm also wondering if u should patch your upstream WSUS server with the same two updates as well...

  • generally it's best to update all the wsus servers to the same patch levels with reboots and syncs for each, whether upstream or downstream but before making more changes let's wait and see if an error is being encountered or not during update checks

  • was this ever working or is this a new setup?

if it's a new setup, there are steps which need to be taken on the client-side when reading the notes in KB2734608

is the CA wsus server a downstream replica or autonomous mode? do u see windows 2012 selected in the product options in the wsus console? appropriate 2012 updates have been approved to the matching computer group?

when u check for updates do u see the list of updates to be applied and u just can't install it or it doesn't get that far?

have there been any proxy servers introduced in the environment recently?

  • Thank you very much Armin, i forgot to mention this but it stopped receiving updates in May 2014, someone just screamed until now, but last updates received where May 2014, until that date everything was working fine.

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

  • recommend u install the following updates on your wsus server

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2828185
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2938066

u may also have to reset one of your 2012 clients to get it to talk to wsus again:

    Net stop wuauserv
    rd /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\
    Net start wuauserv

  • no errors, it's just saying it found no new updates

are you getting any errors when checking for updates on the GUI of the servers?

i'm also wondering if u should patch your upstream WSUS server with the same two updates as well...

  • Thank you very much Armin,

i will ask one of the local admins to see if he sees an error when checking for updates on one of the 2012 R2 server and will let you know.

I am using a downstream to patch these 2012 R2's

As per your initial recommendation i applied:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2828185

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2938066

to my main parent Upstream server, it is a 2003 box, but i havent rebooted it, should I? then do a Synch on the upstream and on the downstream? or run some commands on the 2012 R2's?

the strange thing is that they receive patches for 2012, 2013, 2014 but none patch for this year 2015.

Armin I thank you very much for all your time helping me with this.

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

  • generally it's best to update all the wsus servers to the same patch levels with reboots and syncs for each, whether upstream or downstream but before making more changes let's wait and see if an error is being encountered or not during update checks
