Failed to build the OLAP cubes for MSproject Server 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have MSProject Server 2007 server running on Windows 2003 machine (On the same machine we have VS Team Foundation Server instance also). The Database resides on different machines.

Now a request has come in from the Project Server Administrator to Configure the Analysis Services on the server.

I noticed that on our application server the prerequisites (Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects Collection) which seems to be a later version , for configuring CUBE like
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components
Microsoft SQL Server Native Client are already installed on the server.

is already installed and when configuring the CUBE it gives the below error message:

Failed to build the OLAP cubes. Error: Analysis Services session failed with the following error: Failed to connect to the Analysis Services server USEAIHV719.na.uis.unisys.com. Error: ActiveX component can't create object

Can we install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Objects Collection on top of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects Collection ?

what would be the best practices suggested in this scenario.

    Regards

    Anoop

  • Hi

Probable cause of this issue is: Three SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services components must be installed on the Project Server application server. If all of them are not installed, then this error occurs.

    Solution:

Download and install the SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services components to the Project Server application server.

    • Microsoft SQL Server Native Client (sqlncli.msi)

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Objects Collection (sqlserver2005_xmo.msi)

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components (SQLServer2005_BC.msi)

And Below is technet article on troubleshooting the cube build service, kindly go through with below article also in case it might help you more.

  • Yes, you will need to use the SQL Server 2005 Feature Pack, even if you are on SQL Server 2008. Please refer the technet article below. It clearly states the same.

    Important Important:

Although this article involves SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services, it is important that you download these components from the Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - December 2008 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=142288). At this time, do not use the feature packs for SQL Server 2008 to install and download these components, as those files will not allow you to build cubes in SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services with Project Server 2007.

and this excellent blog at : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2008/10/27/project-server-2007-and-sql-server-2008-error-messages-with-data-analysis-cubes-olap.aspx

  • Hi Sachin and Prasanna,

Thanks for the reply .. Let me be clear on the scenario.

on our application server we have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components,
Microsoft SQL Server Native Client and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects Collection.

As per the technote three SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services components must be installed.

Does this mean, instead of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects Collection we should be having
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Objects Collection on our server- Correct  ?

If so can we install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Objects Collection on the same server with out removing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects Collection ?

The reason why I am asking this question because this is going to be our PROD instance and has anyone come across this scenario.
