Disk Size for Backup of Hyper-V virtual machines and Exchange Data RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I will deploy DPM 2012 in my environment to backup around 200 virtual machines from Hyper-V manager server and to backup my Exchange Server data. I want to give 30TB disk to DPM server to put the backup on these Drives.

My question is what will be the best partition size for DPM where DPM can put the backup so that it can not give me performance issues while taking the backup. I am thinking to have 5TB of LUN multiply by 6 to full fill my 30TB. will it be fine or will this partition space give me performance issue or slowness.

What is the best and recommended method from Microsoft.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

    according to Microsoft (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399365.aspx) :

We recommend that you use disks that have capacity of no more than 1.5 terabytes. Because a dynamic volume can span up to 32 disks, if you use 1.5-terabyte disks, DPM can create replica volumes of up to 48 terabytes.

  • Hi,

As per the article provided by you, it is mentioned that (We strongly recommend that you use GPT disks for the DPM storage pool). if we are going to give 1.5TB each disk then GPT can not be created because GPT can be used when you are using more then 2TB Disks please correct me if i am wrong.

Also what will the pros if we will use 5TB disks, will there be any performance bottle neck on this.

    Thanks
