  • Hi Gary, can you let us know what error or behavior you're seeing that doesn't work? I can configure and use screensavers in my Beta 2 build without complications. Thanks!

I do not get an error, they just will not turn on.

All of them work for me, just sometimes after I re-login it has the screen resolution window open.

Can you even preview the sceensavers?

  • I had the same problem on my first install. I fixed it with a re-install with the sound turned off on the motherboard ( ac'97 chip on an NF3 motherboard). I turned it back on after 5384 was installed and installed the nvidia drivers but had to disable the midi port and the game port ( 5384 didn't recognize the hardware).

  • I can't get my screensaver to work in build 5384, either.  It worked when I first installed Vista, and works in preview mode, carefully.  None of the Vista installed screensavers will activate.

Yes I can preview them but they will not start on their own.

  • Hi, I had the same problem when I installed, I updated my video drivers and now I have all the the screen savers working...

  • Tell me two things and I will solve your problem:

    1. Your Windows Vista Performance Rating
    2. Your Hardware.

Might be a device driver such as video or motherboard. try getting new ones, if you have the latest for both, please answer to the two questions

  • 1. Rating is a 2

    2. P4 3.0 ghz , 1GB DDR Ram, Nvidia 5200fx 128mb Video, 160GB Sata HD, Dell 4600

  • Do you have the latest video drivers for your geforce 5200fx? If you do, then let me tell you that there is a bug with the geforce drivers and how it reacts with Vista. This is a known bug and will be fixed in later builds. But even when it releases, I suggest that you upgrade to at least a geforce 6200GT.

Microsoft Tests Windows Vista on 42 computers each having similar specs:

    1. Intel Core Duo Processor (1.8, 2.4, 2.8ghz...)
    2. an nvidia geforce card (5500FX, 6600GT, 7800Ultra...) or ATI card (Rage Fury 9553, Ati Radeon X9000, or Ati 94722 Ultra (not available in stores yet))
    3. DDR2, PC2900, PC3000 DDR ~ 512mb, 1 gb, 1 1/2 gb, 2, 2 1/2 gb, 3 gb, 3 1/2 gb, 4 gb.
    4. Seagate, Maxtor ~ or relevant 7200 RPM, 10000RPM.
    5. Gaming Graphics Memory: 128 mb, 512 mb.
    6. ~OVERALL~ 2.4 - 3.6 performance rating (2,3 in Vista 5456 and others, 2.4-3.6 for vista 5472)

  • I, too am having problems getting my screen saver to activate.  My hardware is nVidia Geforce 6100 on a Gateway GM 5084.  I installed the Windows Service Pack 2 but still have a problem.  Can you help me?

  • I have the same problem with the screen saver (works in preview mode, but won't self activate).  I have the nVidia e-GeForce MX4000 in my Dell Dimension 2400 (P4 2.4 ghz , 1GB DDR Ram, WinXP w/service pack 2).  I do not have Vista.  I've tried everything I can think of including reinstalling drivers.  Please help.

    Thanks, Al

i have the similar problem too

I had the same problem, and spent way to much time tracking this down, thanks for the link to cure.  I will be returning my MS Wireless mouse for a Logitech

  • Thanks.  I had installed the nVidia card at the same time I added a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse.  I always assumed it was the video card, but when I put the corded keyboard and mouse back on the screensaver started to work again so it's not the card.  But, the Microsoft wireless receiver is 2.1 not 3.0 so the problem started when MS "upgraded" from 2.0 to 2.1, not to 3.0 (some advancement huh?).

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Update released yesterday 6/2/07 "HID - Non-User Input Data Filter" has resolved this issue for me. I'm using a wireless receiver 3.0A.

  • This resolved my issue as well with the Desktop Set 6000 V2.0 with the 3.1 reciever.

Where can this update be found?

    Friday, February 9, 2007 12:28 PM
  • Windows Update. It's an optional install.
    Friday, February 9, 2007 12:58 PM
  • But only if you have that Hardware, is that correct? I looked in updates and could not find it listed or installed. I am not the one having the problem, it is on another machine.
    Friday, February 9, 2007 1:08 PM
  • Yes I think your right. I can't see it from this machine, which doesn't have a wireless mouse or keyboard.
    Friday, February 9, 2007 1:23 PM
  • Thanks for looking Chris.

  • I have the same proble, and I appreciate the help from these postings. I guess the only way to remedy this problem is to go back to the wired mouse and keyboard that came with my PC.
    Monday, April 23, 2007 5:47 PM
  • Make sure you have the receiver plugged when you update it.  I certainly didn't try to install the update with it not being plugged in.  I certainly wasn't informed that the update was not needed, receiving error code 800F020B

  • thank you, this was driving me nuts,I unplugged the receiver too my wireless mouse and everything started working.I never would have figured it.thank you.

  • I hope that you can point me in the right direction because it sounds like we've experienced the same problem.  I am running XP SP2 and just added a Microsoft wireless optical desktop 1000 with a wireless keyboard and mouse.  I also have a nVidia card.  As soon as I added the wireless devices my screensaver stopped working.  I have changed to the wired keyboard and mouse and it works again.  Please let me know what you found to fix this problem.  Thank you, Dean.

  • I don't know how to answer your questions.  I just purchased a hp pavilion dv9000 and have Vista as my operating system.  I can't get my screen saver to work and was told to uninstall PCM Service but I don't see that in they Startup menu after keying in system configuration as instructed.  Can you help me?

  • To find that service right click on the start bar, and choose Task Manager. You will find it listed in Services.

Let me know if it works.

  • I had the same problem with my Dell laptop and Windows XP SP2. I discovered that enabling "Presentation Mode" was all that needed to be done (this is an option in Dell QuickSet). This enables the <FN> F8 feature, which is supposed to be used when you have an external display attached to the laptop (and I don't), so that the LCD on the laptop turns off and the external display turns on. However, not enabling the option will disable display & system power management timeouts! Which not only stopped my screensaver from working, but also all of my power saver settings!
