CPU is a AMD Ryzen 5 (Summit Ridge family)

    Enabled Hyper-v

Created a Gen 1 virtual machine that gets it's OS from the CD drive (D:)

    No virtual network installed.

Genuine MS XP Pro SP2 disk in CD drive.

Install completes and restarts virtual machine.

prompts me to hit key to boot from CD.....which I don't

    Windows XP logo displays.

Then the Dreaded black screen that hangs forever.

Unable to "Shut Down" V machine saying "The current state of the virtual machine does not support

    reboot or shut down"

Only way to get out is to "Turn Off" the virtual machine.

Once you restart the virtual machine You get the windows logo.

Then  it displays "Setup is being restarted........." that hangs forever.

    please help.

    thanks in advance,

  • I'm not sure XP will run on that platform. The reason why you can shut it down is because the guest tools haven't been installed on the VM at that point. I'd spec the VM as low as possible. 1 CPU (single core), 512MB of RAM. Perhaps, consider VirtualBox.

  • Thanks for the reply Jason.

I tried to trim down the VM as much as possible with no luck.

I've been checking into VirtualBox and it looks pretty cool and they

    state it will run XP.

  • It is a nice program, and you cannot argue with the price. Please, don't get me wrong I'm not trying to pitch anything to anyone. I just think Hyper-V will not run Windows XP, and don't want to see anyone bang their heads on a fruitless tree.

  • Windows XP x86 has not been supported in Hyper-V since Server 2008R2.

Saying that just installed Windows XP Pro SP3 Disk on Hyper-V on Windows 10 1703 Build 15063.483 and installed ok got the desktop all setup ok. Mouse does not work but installing the tools from an old installer disk does work.

Also Virtual Box as mentioned is an option, on another machine I use VMware Workstation Player and that runs XP and pretty much any OS I want to, also has good client support with USB and sound.

  • Yea my neighbor just installed XP in Win 10 Hyper-v and it went fine.

I think it's an AMD thing.

going to give VirtualBox a try.

    thanks guys
