Migrating DHCP from 2012 to 2016 Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
Seen quite a few videos on howto migrate DHCP from ServerA/2012 to ServerB/2016 and it seems easy to migrate using the

    netsh command.

Question .... I have is when we turn off the ServerA ... how do the clients know to renew their lease using the ServerB/New DHCP,
since their lease was assigned by ServerA and ServerA no more ON.

    Thank you in adv.

  • Hello WildPacket,

Thank you for posting in this forum.

The steps for a machine without an IP address to obtain an address through DHCP are as follows:

This client broadcasts packet, and DHCP servers without failure will respond to the client. The client selects the first server that responds to it, and then this DHCP server issues the address to it.

The lease issued by the DHCP server is time-limited.

Your machine already has an IP address, and it will request the DHCP server A to renew the lease for some specific period of time. When the time reaches 87.5% of the lease, if the DHCP server A is still not contacted by the client, it will start broadcasting packets again. At this point, only DHCP server B is working properly in your environment, so DHCP server B will issue the address to the client.

    Best Regards,

    Leon
