Vista won't boot; safemode doesn't work; system repair futile RRS feed

  • Question

  • working on my mom's computer. Dell XPS - M1330. Vista Home Premium.

She was attempting to defrag her external HD (don't get me started on this) and her computer crashed. Vista won't boot in safe mode. Computer loads drivers and just sits there with "please wait." nothing happens. Hitting F11 gets me to the launch repair prompt. When it asks "which operating system I would like to recover" the dialog box is blank (bad news). Clicking next brings up another screen with different options, but nothing has worked.

System Repair: runs chkdsk, but it's a black screen after restart.

System Restore: no known restore points

    Memory Diagnostics: All tests passed

Command Prompt: ran a chckdsk says it fixed errors; still doesn't work. Tried to run system file scan, won't let me. Says another operation is being processed.

Factory Restore: won't try this until all resources are exhausted.

Hitting F11 allows me more options but none of those work either. Trying to restore from last known working condition doesn't work.

FYI: blue screen of death has 0x0000000024 code. and a few others.
