Trouble installing Business Intelligence Developement Studio.

Question
-
I have Visual Stuido 2010 installed on my machine and I installed SQL Server 2008 Developer Ed. Now, it appears that the BIDS did not install with SQL Server. When I try to run install again to try to add it, it does not show up as an option. Do I need to uninstall both of them and start over? Also, I saw a note saying that BIDS does not work with VS 2010. So, does that mean that I have to run SQL Server installation first?Friday, February 11, 2011 9:09 PM

Hello,
The workaround is given in Books Online:
“Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 does not support Business Intelligence Development Studio Integration Services, Report Services and Analysis Services projects for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2. To work around this issue, you can install Visual Studio 2008 alongside Visual Studio 2010 on the same machine and then open the Business Intelligence Development Studio projects in Visual Studio 2008.”http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173767.aspx

Hi ArchmageZylon,
Just as Alberto mentioned, the Business Intelligence Development Studio(BIDS) for SQL Server 2008/2008 R2 just uses Visual Studio 2008 Shell, so we could not create the BIDS projects in Visual Studio 2010.
Actually, if we select this feature Business Intelligence Developer Studio while installing SQL Server 2008, the Visual Studio 2008 shell is installed as well, then we could create BIDS projects by using BIDS directly.
To open the Business Intelligence Development Studio, please follow one of the below methods:
- Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 -> SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio
- Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
If there are any progress, please feel free to let me know.
Thanks,
Weilin Qiao
