Hyper-v 2019 kernal power shutdown after trying to initialize NTFS Volume in Storage tier

    Question

  • since Storage Tier with ReFS doesn't support pinning files to a specific tier, we decided to roll back to NTFS.

I moved all the VMs to another pool and deleted the ReFS tiered virtual disk/storage pool and created it again. The moment I try to initialize the volume to use NTFS, an Bug Check Reboot will occur. I tried to remove it and create it again but didn't work.

The tiers in this pool: SSD & HDD. The other non-tiered-pool consist of only NVMe SSD with ReFs filesystem.

used commands to create the volume: (it's happing at Initialize-Disk or Initialize-Volume)

    Get-VirtualDisk $tier_sp_vd_name | Get-Disk | Set-Disk -IsReadOnly 0
    Get-VirtualDisk $tier_sp_vd_name | Get-Disk | Set-Disk -IsOffline 0
    Get-VirtualDisk $tier_sp_vd_name | Get-Disk | Initialize-Disk -PartitionStyle GPT
    Get-VirtualDisk $tier_sp_vd_name | Get-Disk | New-Partition -DriveLetter “E” -UseMaximumSize
    Initialize-Volume -DriveLetter “E" -FileSystem NTFS -Confirm:$false
    Set-Volume -DriveLetter E -NewFileSystemLabel $tier_sp_vd_name

I tried to read the memory dump file but couldn't figure out how to use the information inside of it. Here are some informations inside of it regarding the link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/315271/how-to-use-dumpchk-exe-to-check-a-memory-dump-file

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

Dumpchk is a command-line utility you can use to verify that a memory dump file has been created correctly. But, it’s not the actual content within the minidump file. Would you mind post the content in it? Please remember to cover up your privacy information like ip, hostname or other information in the uploading for your security.

The minidump files are usually located in C:/Windows/Minidump/*.dmp.  Please refer to the following link,

    https://www.technlg.net/windows/windows-crash-dump-memorydmp-file/

Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.

Besides, here’s a docs regarding the bugcheckcode 0x12e mentioned in it for your reference,

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0x12e--invalid-mdl-range

Hope this helps. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Have a nice day!

    Best regards,

    Michael

I used also the BlueScreenView.exe, and it showed me that there is another service "ntoskrnl.exe" in the stack beside the spaceport.sys.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your update.

From your post, it mentioned that it's probably caused by spaceport.sys. I suggest we can first patch this hotfix KB4494441 for your server.

This KB from Windows Update Catalog,

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4494441

Hope this helps. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Michael

  • Nothing changed. The same crash is happing every time I try to initialize the volume with NTFS.

Edit: after the initialization the BlueScreen came back, this time I had to turn of with the power button. I started the Server again and I found the NTFS Volume listen there.

I don't know if I it's good idea to get this volume into production and use it since I'm afraid that later something with happen agaion while using it or while pinning files to storage tiers.

    Please advice here.

Edit 02: The blue screen is occuring now suddenly after the NTFS Volume without doing any change. I think Windows Server Hyper-v 2019 is not stabil yet to be used and there we should go back to WS2016 instead in case there is no solution.

  • apologize fore my late reply. "listen" should be "listed", mistyped.

unfortunately screenshot won't help here, since there is no error or anything else to capture, other than the dumpfile. The screenshot of the bluescreen is already uploaded and posted above.

I was forced to remove the NTFS drive because the next day they server was getting the blue screen directly after loggin in. Once I removed it, the server started normally without any problem.
