Windows XP and Windows Server 2000 - will it support Windows 2016 Server based DHCP? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We have Windows XP, Windows Vista- Clients and also Windows 2000/NT Servers in the network. We wanted to upgrade the Windows 2008/2003 Server based DHCP Servers to the Latest Windows 2016 Servers. Will the Windows XP and the Windows 2000/NT Servers work with the Windows 2016 Server based DHCP ?

Also will we be able to add the XP, Vista clients to the AD Servers based on the Windows 2016 Servers?

    Request to help,

    Thanking you,

    Regards, Ketan

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

In theory, Windows XP/Vista and Windows Server 2000 will work with Windows Server 2016 based DHCP or AD except AD functional level. If Windows server 2016 is Domain Controller, lowest version of the AD function level  is Windows Server 2008. It’s infeasible to make windows server 2000 to be the DC of the domain.

Here are the links refer to AD functional level,

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/active-directory-functional-levels

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-ds/plan/security-best-practices/understanding-active-directory-domain-services--ad-ds--functional-levels

Since Microsoft doesn’t support XP and Server2000, and I haven’t this environment for test, I recommend you to upgrade client to the latest windows version. You may give it a try certainly.  I look forward your good news.

Anyway it is always a good habit to back up the system prior to any component changes. So certainly you can back up your system before proceeding just in case of any unexpected disaster.

    Hope the information above helpful.

Highly appreciate your effort and time. If you have any questions and concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Michael
