DFS vs DFS-R

Question
-
I have read that it is possible to have DFS-R - replicating of folders - without actually setting up a DFS name space.
Is that correct?
If correct, what would be gained or lost by doing the two in conjunction/separately?
I guess I'm asking is there any synergy between the two - is DFS-R better in some way if DFS is in place? Is there a downside to DFS-R if DFS is in place? I understand the benefits of each on their own - just not sure what they bring to the table for each other.Monday, December 16, 2013 6:19 AM

Hi,
Yes these 2 functions could be separated.
With DFS-N, we can combine multiple folder targets on different file server into a same path like \\domain.com\namespace\folder. Users will be directed to their insite target automatically for saving network cost.
Sometimes we just need to sync folders so we do not need to set DFS-N in this purpose.
And no there is specific benefits with or without either of them - Of course we need DFS-R to keep file syncing if we have more than 1 folder targets in DFS-N.
