  • They can but for XP / 2003 and anything older the process of installing integration services is a manual one.

If you install a 2012 R2 host then the vmguest.iso is included so you can present it to these older OS's. For 2016 and newer it may still work but you'll need to come up with vmguest.iso from 2012 R2 host which you can then mount in order to install IS

Vista / 2008 and newer have IS as a built-in part of the operating system.

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting in our forum!

First of all, we can do this, but compared with the new virtual machine systems, they are a little more difficult to install.

As Dave mentioned above, you may need to install integration services manually. For detail information about Integration Service, you can see here:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/manage/manage-hyper-v-integration-services

In addition, about how to install Windows Vista in Hyper-V, please refer to:

    https://www.interfacett.com/blogs/installing-windows-vista-hyper-v/

Finally, from my personal point of view, if not necessary, I do not recommend that you install the old virtual machine operating systems on Hyper-V, because some of them have stopped updating.

    Hope this can help you.

    Cheers,

    Daniel
