Publishing an App that will use a Server Web Farm from UAG RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

can someone expalin how to publish an Application that will use a server web farm.

I have to WEb Server . and a same web site on both of them with the same host binding.

This is the procedure that i use.

Add Application>Web Other Web Application (portal host name)>I type something for the name and type>I select Configure a farm of application servers:

    This is where im confused.

I have 2 servers. And i want tu publish a web site with host bindings. How am i supposed to do this? Enter the addresses of the servers, is that all or is the more cofniguration?

What is supposed to be the Application URL. Where do i specify the HOST binding?

    Thank all in advance!!!!

  • Ok here is the problem that im facing.

When i specify the IP addresses of the 2 servers and the 'send an http get request' request path to /default.htm.

TMG is checking the farm in the Monitoring>Connectivity Verifires:

    10.1.1.10/default.htm

    10.1.1.11/default.htm

these are the destinations that TMG is checking with HTTP GET. But I want to check  the website site.contoso.com/default.htm with HTTP GET on those two servers.

And I cant make that happent. The only way is to make two same sites on two servers with diferent HOST headers. And specifiy those host headers as the servers for UAG (I also have to add those host headers into DNS so that uag can find them). But this is not what i want to do.

It's go to be something im doing wrong. But i dont know what.

     Any help or sugetisons?

    thnx all!!!

  • There is a great video for this on http://www.forefrontsecurity.org/

Go to screencasts, Microsoft Forefront UAG, Installation and Configuration, How to configure WFLB with Custom Web Application.

  • Have you tried publishing with the Web Application (Application Specific Hostname) instead?

Else you could use one of the MOSS templates, where it specifically has a Host Header entry field.

  • Ill try tomorrow and get back to you. Tnx!

    Ill just summarize my problem:

We have 2 exactly same Web Servers. With two web sites on both of them (the web sites are same, as we want to do load balancing).

We are connecting to the web sites by the host names that we binded to them (again the host names are same on both of the servers, for the same web site)

So we want to try to publish the Web Sites (Applications) over UAG with load balancing (Web Server Farm).

But we cant find a way to do this correctly.

Ill try your idea S.Kwan and send the results! Tnx!!!

  • That video is what you need to do, but opposed to selecting the 'Other Web Application (portal hostname)' try 'Other Web Application (application specific hostname)'

or if your web farm is MOSS based, then use one of the 'Microsoft Office Sharepoint ...' applications in UAG.

    Look forward to your feedback.

  • Then im doing something wrong. I tried 'Other Web Application (application specific hostname)' but i didnt work , i would enter in the public host name feald: the host name that i use for binding to the site. Ill get a warning tha the cert isnt valid for that host (thats expected). And in the App url i should use that same host name? Am I supposed to maby have something in the DNS?

Again until i try it tomorrow cant say if it works :)

    tnx!

  • Hi S.Kwan

Im still confused, Web Application (application specific hostname)' is the same as the config for MOSS app. But im not sure how to set it up. To do what i want to. What am i supposed to put in the Server tabs? Where am i supposed to set up the host hame of the website so that the farm can check to see if its alive?

  • Try this....

On your Trunk Applications click Add, Select MS Office Sharepoint 2007, specify App name, leave endpoint Policies default for now, select Configure a farm of applicaiton servers, in Addresses specify the IP addresses of your 2 web servers, leaves Paths as /, type in the public hostname (www.company.com), select Replace the host header withthe following (and here type in your Host Header name), leave Cookie-based affinity, under 'send an http get request' request path type in /default.htm (assuming default.htm is the default html file that will load), next page select your Authentication provider,

    next next, and Activate.

    Does that work?

  • So in the 'address' field type in 'site.contoso.com' and just make sure UAG know how to resolve this to IP...DNS entries or local HOSTS file

  • Yes but that is not the point of a far of servers as i know. Cisco does it much cleaner. If im going to do it wiht UAG ill going to have to make DNS record for every instance of a wae site on each server with a diferent host name. site1a.conostoo.com, site1b.conosto.com ect.... that not a realy nice solutinon but that is the one that im using for now. But i wasnt sure that that was the only way to do it.

    tnx S.Kwan.

  • The SharePoint 2007/2010 templates allow you to define a specific host header; you could use these or create you own custom templates based upon these...

    Cheers

  • But that wont help with the farm issue. TMG is checking the farm with the values that i set in the server addresses field. So if I put IP addresses his checking a website on the addresses http://10.1.1.10 and http://10.1.1.11, but my web sites are configured to answer only to http://site1.contoso.com (with name binding in IIS).

Im pretty new to UAG, so it problaby me doing something wrong but i cant figure what.

A similar question, related to this.  When I add a new application 'Other Web Application (portal hostname)' what am i supposed to put in the serrver addess field? The IP address of the server, the server FQDN, or the name of the web site that im publishing and i have in DNS? And what am im supposed to put in the App URL (the url to the web site?).

Im setting the app like this now. In the server address field im putting the name of the wrb site from DNS, and in the App URL the URL to the web site, which is the same as the server address in this case, only with address http:// in front. Is this correct?

And if it is why is the filed for the server addresses named like that if im putting the applicaiton name from DNS  (basically the URL only without http:// ) there?

Thanks allot!!!, and sorry for being ignorant this much  :)
