Move/Deploy Site collection from Dev to Test/Production server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a site created(a site collection and a single root site under this site collectiom) on dev enviornment. We want to move this to our Test server then subsequently to production server.

    The site contains following things:

    1. SPD workflow

    2. Custom webparts

    3. Custom list with default contents

    4. custom user groups and permission levels

Whats the best way to move/deploy the dev site to test/prod enviornements under an existing web application?

Using site template, stsadm export/import or site backup/restore?

    Thanks in advance

    San

  • If you are deploying your web parts as features that can be activated on the new site, then that should be fine.

SharePoint Designer workflows, by design, are associated with specific lists/libraries at specific URLs.  When you try to stsadm export/import your site, stsadm backup/restore, or try to use site templates, the workflow will not work.

stsadm backup/restore is not Microsoft supported across farm levels, only export/import.

Another options is to put your site collection into its own content db, and then copy/reattach/restore that content db to your test/production environments.

  • Hello,

I would use the stsadm backup/restore option.  But....

    1. You will have to recreate the SPD workflow.  By default, SPD workflows are direct associations with specific lists/libraries and are not reusable
    2. How was this custom web part created?  Was it created and packaged in a wsp file and then deployed to your dev environment as a solution and then deployed as a feature?
    3. See comment for #2
    4. Are the users in the same domain?

  • We are deploying all the custom components(web parts) using deployment package.

Whats the problem with site template? The workflow gets copied with that. As the per MSDN documentation, the backup & restore does not work across farm. It suggest, stsadm export/import is best method..
