Windows 10 2004 Build and Capture failure due to MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using: Microsoft MDT version 8456, with KB 4564442 applied following install of Windows 10 2004 ADK

    Good morning,

I have been using a reliable Build and Capture task sequence for some time, and all versions of Windows 10 up to 1909 have been built and captured successfully, without errors, with the task sequence.  This includes a 1909 build and capture after updating the ADK and then KB4564442 applied with deployment share updates and new ISO generated for booting.

However, whenever I am attempting a build and capture with Windows 10 2004, the task sequence gets to execute sysprep, and this fails.

C:\windows\system32\sysprep\panther\setupact.log points towards MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS as being the culprit, extract from the log file is below:

2020-07-28 09:45:24, Info                  SYSPRP Entering SysprepGeneralizeValidate (Appx) - validating whether all apps are also provisioned.

Performing a check on getting the information for the Windows Package shows that it is installed, but pending removal, but also that it'a a system level application.

Clearly that's something newly added in 2004, as checking for this in Windows 10 1909 shows nothing, and no errors during sysprep.

Can anyone please suggest how this can be resolved?

  • I'm also having this exact same issue.

My OS Version is Windows 10 Pro 2004, Build 19041.450

I had no issue sysprep until recently.

  • Hi - Im having the exact same issue. Never had a problem before capturing W10 images.. Did you find a resolution?

  • i was trying to capture my image with an older desktop.  I tried with a new laptop and it worked.

  • I didn't find a proper answer to be honest.  It was using a virtual machine Gen 1 with Hyper-V (which I've used for all my previous Win10 build and capture task sequences in MDT), and had a point I could go back to with nothing on there, so could attempt a fresh build every time.

Every other Win10 version with build and capture I had used worked fine - it's the same task sequence bar applying the OS is different for each one.

What I did do as a workaround was to enforce a task sequence pause (add a command line in to do this):

    cscript.exe %SCRIPTROOT%\LTISuspend.wsf

I placed this in the task sequence before the Apply PE and commence sysprep phase.

Once that was done, and it was paused, I was then able to open an admin command prompt at that point, and remove all the AppX applications not in use, then click on the icon to resume the task sequence.

Not ideal, but it at least did allow sysprep to run and create WIM.

I suspect what is happening was that the Appx application for the Windows.Client.CBS installs itself and is prepared to run, but doesn't remove cleanly during the initial cleanup phase that the sysprep execute is supposed to run, hence later in that execution it errors out as still being there.

Ideally there should be an MDT update to ensure that AppX app is cleanly removed at that point.

  • Can you provide a location or command or how you removed the Appx application?   Thanks in advance
