Need to reinstall Windows 7 onto desktop PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had an ACER Desktop Computer that ran on Windows 7 Home(pre-build so NO disk included). I recently built a new Gaming PC and took the 1TB Hard drive that was in that old computer and added it to my new PC for extra storage. Coincidently, my dad's computer completely went just a day after i got my PC so i offered to rebuild my old ACER so he could use that as his new computer. I wiped the 150GB hard drive that was in his old(crashed) computer and placed it in the ACER. Everything is perfect except now i no longer have the OS that was pre-installed on it and i do not have a disk since it was a pre-built computer. How can i use the same product key that was already on that computer before to reinstall the same version of windows 7, without a disk? Thanks! (ps, i know some people talk about how using a product key twice is illegal, but i believe that is only the case if it's being used on a new different* computer, so i do think i should be able to do this, if it is indeed illegal then i will just have to buy another OS)

  • It is illegal and you will not be able to find an OEM copy of win 7.

Since Microsoft has removed the digital river downloads you have two equally bad choices.

Request backup media from Microsoft https://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246?wa=wsignin1.0

Or if you have a retail key  (NOT OEM from pre-installed OS) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery

You may be better off borrowing from someone.  For OEM (pre-installed) you need to contact the computer maker.

  • Dang, I really didn't think that was gonna be the answer. Well, thank you for the help! I'll have to contact Acer and figure it out from there.
