Where have my Snapshots gone? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer has a C and D drive. I install programs on C and keep Data and GHOST images on D. I installed Hyper-V (on C), created a VM (Windows Server 2003) on D and took several snapshots of it.  I named the snapshots, they showed up under the Hyper-V Manager, I could easily Apply different ones, and life was sweet.

Then I used GHOST to stamp down a "clean" OS on my C drive. The image had Hyper-V installed and it clearly showed the VM Server I had saved on D. But all my Snapshots were gone -- they had simply disappeared from the Hyper-V Manager. On drive D, under the Win 2003 VM directory I created, I found a Snapshots folder. It was loaded with other folders and I thought the Snapshots were kept there. Apparently not as stamping down the image caused them to  vanish. Where are the Snapshot's stored (or, why did they disappear?)

    TIA,

  • No, there's no supported method. You might be able to inspect the .AVHD files and then merge them up.

  • Your snapshots were on C. When you restored the image copy to C, you wrote over your snapshots. Snapshots are stored in a folder structure under the path defined in your Hyper-V Settings property page. There is a setting called Virtual Machines. Within that folder you will find a Snapshots folder and also a Virtual Machines folder. Within the Snapshots folder are folders that include guids as part of the folder names. Within these folders are avhd files, which are the snapshots.

  • What you said makes sense. So I brought up Hyper-V to see where my Snapshots were placed. (I didn't set the path). For my Win2k03 VM server on D: I found this:

    D:\VMs\HyperV\Win2k03\x86Win2k03\Snapshots

Here's what that directory (up one level) shows:

    Snapshots
          6FFE4070-59C1-49E6-867E-3432C11120FC
          7D69F7F1-8CF1-4D29-AD4C-02DD3557D52E

          D704771C-303C-4270-80DC-9B08B7C49A08

          6FFE4070-59C1-49E6-867E-3432C11120FC.xml
          7D69F7F1-8CF1-4D29-AD4C-02DD3557D52E.xml
    ...
    ...

    Virtual Machines
    x86Win2k03

So It looks like my Snapshots were saved on D!  Is there a way to get them back into the Hyper-V Manager?
