How To Determine The Causes Of Blue Screens On Laptops With Windows 7? RRS feed

  • Question

  • The blue screens are shown only for 1 second before laptop restarts. If i could have that screen not timing out, i could at least tell where problem comes from. Is there a way to further investigate the causes of blue screens if there is no way to pause blue screens? My laptop restarts sometimes and i need to investigate.

  • have you updated the network card driver?

    is this the latest version?

If yes, update ZoneAlarm to (9.2.76), you use an older version:

if this doesn't fix it, completely remove ZoneAlarm.

  • You can disable the automatic reboot when the PC crashes:

    http://www.nirmaltv.com/2010/03/17/how-to-disable-the-automatic-restart-on-system-failure-in-windows-7/

Now you know the STOP code and can look here for more details:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff542347(VS.85).aspx

To see the cause you must open it with the Debugging Tools:

    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspx

If you are unable to see the cause, you can also upload the dmp files from the folder C:\Windows\Minidump. I can take a look at them.

  • Bug Check 0x7F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

    0x00000008
, or Double Fault , indicates that an exception occurs during a call to the handler for a prior exception. Typically, the two exceptions are handled serially. However, there are several exceptions that cannot be handled serially, and in this situation the processor signals a double fault. There are two common causes of a double fault:

        * A kernel stack overflow. This overflow occurs when a guard page is hit, and the kernel tries to push a trap frame. Because there is no stack left, a stack overflow results, causing the double fault.
        * A hardware problem.

You can also try this Hotfix:
Stop error message when you run an application that transfers data by using the UDP protocol in Windows Server 2008 R2 or in Windows 7: "STOP 0x0000007F"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981180/en-us

When this doesn't fix it, update your network card driver, please.

The minidumps are not useful for UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP bug checks.

Configure your Windows to create a kernel dump [1] and upload the zipped dump (C:\Windows\memory.dmp) to your SkyDrive [2] and post a link here when the PC still crashes after updating the drivers.
