Transiting AD 2008 to AD 2016

    Question

  • Hi,

We have forest root domain running windows 2008 domain controllers. The forest functional level and domain functional level is 2008.

We wish to transit from AD 2008 to AD 2016. Need to Know if this is supported or not.

It would be great if anyone can point to a AD transition support matrix documents from Microsoft.

    Regards

  • Hi

forest functional level and domain functional level is 2008.>>> You can migrate from server 2008 to server 2016.(so functional level needs to be 2008 and your's OK.)

You can check these articles.(valid for server 2008 to server 2016)

    http://blogs.msmvps.com/mweber/2012/07/27/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2008-or-windows-server-2008-r2-to-windows-server-2012/

And check my article, you can use google translate maybe :)

  • Hi,

You can migrate your DC to Windows 2016 because the forest and domaine fonctional level is 2008.To install the first DC under Windows 2016 the forest and domain functional level must be 2003 or higher. ( it's recommended to upgrade it to 2008 to avoid te installation of DC under 2003 )

But you have to check that all you production applications are able to communicate with Donaim controller Under Windows 2016.

  • Hi Todd

    Appreciate your quick response

It would have been more helpful if there was any support matrix document from Microsoft.
