Trying to track down the source for an error event on our MOSS 2007 machine RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Last night, we got some events of type Error Event 6857 that say "Cannot connect to SMTP host 牳ぶ⸱慣⹳牯g፤."

We have no machines by that name. Our server is not configured to connect to a machine by that name.

I look in the 12hive logs and there is nothing mail related apparent at the time these events occurred.

I looked in the 12 hive usage logs, and there doesn't appear to be any obvious accessing of a page that would generate email.

I have not be contacted by anyone yet indicating they did not receive expected alerts, reports, etc. from SharePoint.

Any place I could look for clues in what might be the cause of this type of issue?

    Thank you

  • hi,

you can refer - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc560961(v=office.12).aspx to get information on this, this is basically related with your farm's SMTP services. and in this scenario

    • The SMTP host is not running

    • The SMTP service is not running on the SMTP server

    • The SMPT host is not correctly configured in Central Administration

  • Is it possible that you have something else configured and looking for an SMTP server if not SharePoint? Maybe a 3rd party solution?

  • Thank you. That might be the case - they might have been performing maintenance on the machine. I am less worried now. I was afraid something had reconfigured SharePoint to point to an smtp in another country.
