Is it possible to compress SMS 2003 backup ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Running SMS 2003 (...yes I know it's unsupported) and have configured the backup task from within SMS.  Is it possible to compress this backup ?  we have an issue with space on the drive so it's failing.  There is only enough room for one backup.

  • Why not use the built-in compression on the windows drive for that folder?

  • Hi,

I never tried that and maybe it's not supported I don't know. It's better to add disk space on the server or use another location such a network path ...

  • Use the Afterbackup.bat to move the backup files to another location to free up disk space.

    see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc181721.aspx for more details.

  • Yes built-in compression on the backup folder might work.  I wasn't sure how this would impact the length of time and performance when running the backups ?

  • It should have little to no effect on the backup time.
