Issue with May 2018 updates for Windows Server 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Colleagues,

Post installation of Windows Server 2016 updates - May 2018, the server became extremely slow. I then tried to uninstall the update (latest one), post which server restarted and it then automatically again downloaded the delta update but got stuck during installation and throwing following errors.

    1. There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x8000ffff).

I also checked status for Windows Update service in services.msc and it’s in running status. Please guide as to how to proceed now.

    Thanks & regards,

    Nikhil

  • Hi Nikhil,

Thank you for your information provided.

Regarding error 0x8000ffff, it means Catastrophic failure and error 0x800705b4 means the operation returned because of the timeout period.

You could try following steps to run a sfc scan for system.

    1. Click Start, and then write ‘cmd’ in the search box.
    2. When the command prompt icon appears, right click it and select the “Run as Administrator”. You may be prompted to provide the Administrator password at this stage.
    3. In the resulting command prompt window, key in “sfc/scannow”. Press Enter.
    4. As the scan proceeds, do not close the command prompt

BTW, please check windowsupdate.log whether anything report errors. It would be better if you could provide the screenshot of error information and share windowsupdate.log by OneDrive.

    Hope above information helps.

    Best Regards

  • Hi Nikhil,

I am glad you could install Windows update now and please kindly click “Mark as answer” if my reply is helpful.

Regarding new error message, it does not seems to a WSUS issue. To get better support, it is suggested to post this new error issue to Windows Server 2016 General so that a dedicated support professional will handle this. Here is a link for your reference.

Moreover, based on my research, you could check what go wrong from the error title like below image in yellow.

    Hope above information helps.
