Is Dedup of modern backup storage on a physical DPM 2019 supported? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

There is a physical DPM 2019 box used for backing up Hyper-V, File, SQL, Exchange, System States (AD) to "modern backup storage" in form of a Storage Spaces pool local (!) in the DPM server. As saving space is more important here than performance, here is the question: Can we activate dedup on the DPM storage pool? Officially this works when using remote SMB shares, so it seems not to be recommeneded. But is it just not recommended for performance reasons, or will it break something?

  • Hi,

It is not supported enabling DEDUP directly on the DPM Storage pool and it will definitely break the backups. Although REFS supports Dedup now (2019 onwards) but DPM leverages REFS block cloning mechanism for maintaining Recovery points hence if you enable DEDUP on the storage pool directly, it will probably corrupt the data in the volume.

  • Hi,

The only way is to have the DPM server virtualized and the VMDK/VHDX files on a storage that has deduplication enabled, but even this has caused some performance issues.

  • Thanks for all your valuable input. We solved the problem by ordering larger disks in order to double the capacity. :-)
