MS Projects 2010 crashed - It was unstable & needed update RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been having endless problems with MS Project 2010 in particular. I have a drawer full of files that i created in MS Projects that for some reason unknown to me, either crash during editing or save and close but cannot be opened again later. I simply get a dialogue box "Microsoft Office Project has stopped, Windows can check online......" I have already obtained a brand new computer, new installation of MS Projects 2010 and have opted to work with MS Projects 2007 on many occasions just to get the scheduling done. This program is not stable and not reliable.

The following is the error message I get:

    Problem signature:

I believe Project 2010 is not updated. Pls update the product and try again. This is the update center where you can download the latest service pack and cumulative updates:

  • Hello,

Your concern is noted and while most of us know the frustration you must be feeling, it is helpful to provide a bit more information about the circumstances, rather than a brash statement about the product being unstable.  In order for  this forum to be helpful, give us information about the operating system (Windows 7, Vista), Project 2010 version (Professional, Standard), and environment (stand-alone, server).  In addition, the current, loaded service pack would be helpful as well.  We are here to make using the product more enjoyable and productive.  Simply saying it is unstable does not help us to help you.

    Suggest (in this order):

: do a repair install of Project

: do a repair install of Office

: restore Windows to a previous, stable versoin

: re-install Windows, Office, and Project

: return the the new computer to the vendor. It's probably a hardware problem.

  • Sorry, I was too brief in my explanation. I can certainly provide more information.

I originally had a Thinkpad T60P with XP Pro. Don't have the details any more. It had MS Projects 2010 installed (same as details below). I had endless problems with a number of my models. I would save a file in 2010; close the file; open the file but it would crash. I was to the point of saving the file every 5-10 minutes under a different name i.e. Beta01, 02.... 15.... After each save, i would close the file to see if it would reopen. At some point it would not open and then I had to go back to an earlier version that would open. This of course is not productive. So we did the repair approach first; no difference. We reinstalled MS Projects; no difference, Rebuilt the whole computer software; no difference. installed MS Projects 2007 and gave up on 2010. Still a few hickups with the files saved from 2010 back to 2007 but got some work done.

I was then provided with a new Computer Thinkpad T420, MS Windows 7 Enterprise version 6.1.7601 Service pack 1 build 7601, Processor intel Core I5-2520M CPU @2.5ghz, 4GB ram

Installed is MS Project 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.4518.1014) and then MS Project Professional 2010, (14.0.4751.1000) MSO (14.0.6106.5005)

2010 seemeed to be OK for a while but eventually I had a crash again. I was moving a number of tasks from one location to another; MS Projects 2010 crashed and had to close. I redid about half a day's work again from a previous version and saved it. Everything seemed fine. I opened the file now a few days later and just got the dialogue box per my original question again.

I have tried everything, changed computers, repaired and / or reinstalled operating systems and program software. the one thing that is constant is MS Projects 2010 keeps crashing. 2007 seems to be more stable, 2010 is not. Everything else in the MS Office 2010 arsenal is OK too. I need someone from Microsoft to take a serious look at this problem without me having to provide them with a credit card number first. I have wasted too many hours on this already.

  • Hi "Project user",

Its like finding the cure for cancer.

I installed a hotfix on the link you suggested: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/ee748587.aspx

I am now able to load files that appeared to be corrupted a few months ago. I know that I looked for updates to MSP 2010 some time ago under MS updates or downloads but don't think I came across this particular link. I will keep this link for the future.

I will advise our IT people to update any other users in our system and I will carry on and try to be productive with MSP for a change. For the moment this issue is closed for me.
