Detection Failed - Anyone have WSS 3 + SP1 Installer? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello -

I am trying to update a WSS 3.0 SP1 installation to SP2, and have run into the error about Detection Failed. I am attempting to perform the steps provided in this forum message by Doug (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointadmin/thread/cfa66cd3-2aa2-44ee-9393-ffae41d4f70c).

However, the slipstreamed WSS 3.0 with SP1 is no longer available on Microsoft's site. It has been replaced by the SP2 installer.

Does anyone by chance have this file archived somewhere that I could download from in order for me to install on another server to try to copy the files from the installer directory.

    Thanks!

    Eric

  • This mistake was clearly made when WSS 3.0 + SP2 was added to the download library because it used the same URL that had earlier been used for WSS 3.0 + SP1.

(I.e. it isn't a case of the +SP1 link being redirected to the +SP2 link which would probably be easier to solve)

I've asked a contact in Microsoft if he can help, but he's not with the download library people so he might not be able to do more than forward my request.

  • In the meantime you can download WSS 3.0 and SP1 separately and create a slip stream version install if needed.

From what I have found, though I don't understand the logic, this "overwrite" was done on purpose due to SP1 no longer being supported. I don't understand the logic since the separate SP1 download is still available yet they overwrite the WSS+SP1 download.

If the separate download was dropped because SP1 was no longer supported then it is also a complete mystery why the separate download for the *even older* WSS 3.0 with no SP1 is still available.

I.e I agree with you, Fred, that the "logic" of dropping the separate WSS 3.0 + SP1 download is indeed impossible to understand.
