DPM 2016 and Hyper-V 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Hyper-v 2016 VM live migrated from stand alone server 2016 to cluster 2016. Stand alone Server have Hyper-V backup on server DPM1 (DPM 2016), cluster have Hyper-V backup on server DPM2 (DPM 2016).

By live migrated VM I try to do backup on DPM2 server and I get message:

One or more of the selected data sources are already configured for protection on the primary DPM server. When you switch back protection, the replicas of these data sources will be protected from the primary DPM server. (ID: 31162)

    and then

DPM cannot access the path RCT\Server01 because part of the path has been deleted or renamed.
Check the path and enter it again.
    ID: 36

On DPM1 was backup of Server01 deleted (in the end will be all backups from stand alone Hyper-V, because we move all VMs from stand alone Hyper-V to cluster).

    Thank You for answers.

  • Hi,

It sounds like DPM2 was a secondary DPM server to DPM1.  Under that condition you cannot move protection.

Moving protected servers with DPM secondary servers

Moving protected servers between DPM servers that are under secondary protection isn't supported. To illustrate this we have the following:

      • Server1

      • Server2

      • DPM1 acting as primary DPM server

      • DPM2 acting as another primary DPM server

      • DPM3 acting as secondary server for DPM1 and DPM2

      Where:

      • Server1 is protected by DPM1

      • Server2 is protected by DPM2

      • DPM3 is a secondary server for DPM1 and DPM2 (and thus protects Server1 and Server2.

      The following occurs:

      • Scenario 1

        • DPM1 fails or is removed from the infrastructure.

        • You now want to protect Server1 with DPM2 (with DPM3 acting as the secondary server).

      • Scenario 2

        • DPM1 fails or is removed from the infrastructure.

        • You now want to protect Server1 with DPM3.

Both of these scenarios are unsupported. You can only select one of the following options:

    • Option 1 - Use the "Switch Protection" option on DPM3 for Server1, and leave DPM3 in this mode going forward. Note that in this scenario you can't add secondary protection for Server1 on another DPM server when you're using switched protection mode.

    • Option 2 - Rebuild DPM1 with the same name and restore the DPM database. This allows DPM to resume primary protection.

    • Option 3 - Move protection for Server1 to a new DPM server (DPM4) that DPM3 doesn't know about.

  • Hi Mike,

Sorry but we have no DPM secondary server, all DPM servers are primary.

Once more, Server01 was on stand alone Hyper-V server (backup on DPM01) and then live-migrated to Hyper-V cluster (backup on DPM02).

On DPM01 was deleted backup from Server01 and try to do Hyper-V backup on DPM02.

    Thanks.

  • Check to see what this sql query returns.

On the Secondary DPM Server (DPM02).

    1)  Open sql server management studio and connect to the sql instance used for DPM Database.
    2)  Run this SQL query against the DPMDB.

    select servername,isdpm from dbo.tbl_AM_Server
    where MarkedForDeletion = 0 and IsDPM = 1

If it returns the server name of the DPM01 then an agent was at one time deployed to it and is the cause of the error.
