ADFS Single Server Upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have ADFS implemented as a single server in our environment.    We are just wondering if we could do an in-place upgrade of the operating system going from Windows 2012 to windows 2016.     Is this possible without breaking the ADFS configuration?

    Thanks in advanced.

  • Hi,

Have a look at the following documents from Microsoft.

You cannot in place upgrade a Windows Server 2012 R2 ADFS Farm node to Windows Server 2016. You will have to install a Windows Server 2016 federation server and add it to your existing Windows Server 2012 farm.

"Administrators can add new, Windows Server 2016 federation servers to an existing Windows Server 2012 R2 farm. As a result, the farm is in "mixed mode" and operates the Windows Server 2012 R2 farm behavior level. To ensure consistent behavior across the farm, new Windows Server 2016 features cannot be configured or used in this mode."

"Once all Windows Server 2012 R2 federation servers have been removed from the mixed mode farm, and in the case of a WID farm, one of the new Windows Server 2016 federation servers has been promoted to the role of primary node, the administrator can then raise the FBL from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016. As a result, any new AD FS Windows Server 2016 features can then be configured and used."

    Hope this information helps!

    Kind regards,
    Leon

  • Leon,

Thanks for the information.    How does one enable or check if to see if Windows 2012 R2 is running in a farm environment?    I am assuming with a single server we are not and I haven't saw if we can convert what we have.    Do you have any suggestions or articles that would help me.

  • You need to first identify which are your ADFS servers with your IT department/administrators.

There are numerous upgrade guides out there, just look for:
"Upgrade ADFS 3.0 to ADFS 4.0" or "Upgrade ADFS 2012 R2 to ADFS 2016"

    Here's one guide for example:

  • I can identify our servers (we currently have one ADFS and one web proxy) - Can this configuration be converted into a farm environment?    All the upgrade guides I have seen assumes you have a farm environment already.   That is where I am struggling with.

  • I am wondering if this would still work for ADFS 2016

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2012-R2-and-2012/dn486787(v=ws.11)

Could I use this method to get to a farm under ADFS 2016 ?
