Slow start of applications RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    Running App-V 4.6 on Windows 7 VDI clients. Everything works as expected, but we notice some annoying slow starts of different applications. It is completely random, it happens to all app-v applications. Sometimes everything starts within seconds, sometimes there are delays of up to 30 seconds with "Checking for updates". All apps are 100% loaded. For instance, when I start an application the logs shows this:

    [05/25/2010 13:32:59:190 SWAP INF] {hap=3C:app=Internet Explorer 8:tid=E40:usr=fritss}
    Elapsed time for upload: 0.344 seconds

    [05/25/2010 13:32:59:518 SWAP INF] {hap=3C:app=Internet Explorer 8:tid=E40:usr=fritss}
    Elapsed time for launch: 1.312 seconds

    These are very good startup times. Now I start the same application again, 30 seconds later. It doesn't matter if I close the first instance.

    [05/25/2010 13:33:29:669 SWAP INF] {hap=3D:app=Internet Explorer 8:tid=F50:usr=fritss}
    Elapsed time for upload: 0.0 seconds

    [05/25/2010 13:33:29:857 SWAP INF] {hap=3D:app=Internet Explorer 8:tid=F50:usr=fritss}
    Elapsed time for launch: 27.781 seconds

    This time it takes almost 30 seconds before the application starts.

    I can't find any clues in any logfiles. I don't know where to start troubleshooting.

  • Hello,

    Use Process Monitor to determine the activity in the background on the machine. As its a VDI any general performance troubleshooting outside of the specific VM would be worth investigating.

  • After more testing, it seems to be related to my other "problem" as discussed here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/appvclients/thread/ccad086f-7369-498c-b92e-b750bdb1cccb

    It looks like that only packages with DSC are experiencing the problem. I will setup a workstation without the shared cache to see if the problem is related to the shared cache and DSC. I will report back after more testing.

  • Hello,

    FYI - the more suited applications the longer the startup time.
