Troubleshooting delayed message delivery SBS2008

    Question

  • I'm seeing an outgoing email delivery problem that primarily is happening with email addresses that end in .biz.  The sender is receiving messages saying "This message has not yet been delivered. Microsoft Exchange will continue to try delivering the message on your behalf. "  Using the troubleshooting assistant, I don't see any problems.  From what I can see, the messages are being delivered.

Is there a higher level of logging that I can enable?  One of the domains didn't have a matching PTR record but others do.  In cases like this I tend to point the finger at the recipient server but I don't want that to be my knee-jerk response if I should be checking something more closely on my end.

  • Have you run the Configure a Smart Host for Internet e-mail wizard? Are you using a smart host to send out emails?

  • What smart host am I to use?  I don't really want to depend on my ISP's server.  Doesn't that also open another can of worms?
