Replica is inconsistent RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts

Yesterday I implemented DPM-2010 to protect my exchange server 2007. I simply followed steps and configured in a single shot. I created Protection group of my exchange server which has 3 storage group. Simply dismounted the DBs and deleted all folders so that I can check the restoration process. Amazingly it worked.

When I tried to show demo to my higher management so that they can give me green signal to implement it, it threw an error "DPM encountered a retry able VSS error ID 30112". Screen shot attached.

When I check the Protection Tab. It shows all error message "Replica is inconsistent". Attaching screenshot.

Overall, Once its recorved successfully but when I deleted some .log files from Storage Group and try to restore, it showing above mentioned errors. Please help

  • You have to run consistency check so that your DB will be consistency with the DPM server even after restoring.

    Please run consistency check.

    Hope that helps,

  • When you delete log files then the DPM will not be able to trace the changes in the Exchange DB and therefor will not be able to take backup until the Exchange DB log files solved. Although you will still be able to restore previouse exchange backup.

You have to do the following. It's either you have now a VSS writer error or a broken chain in Exchange.

    1. Check VSS. Go to elevated command prompt and write "vssadmin list writers" look for Exchange writer and check the status. If its not stable 1 then you have to restart the Exchange server to be able to fix that.

    2. If the problem is with the Exchange Log then you have to enable the circule logging in exchnage (be careful that will delete all logfiles and will not allow you to restore exchange to a specific time but since you are cannt take the backup then you have to break the missing chain in the logs as well as you have to dismount the Exchange DB) after you make sure that all log files been truncated, disable the circule logging one more time run the backup and it will work.

    Hope that helps,

    Laith.

  • Hi Laith,

Thank for the rapid response.  There is not any VSS error in DPM/EXCHANGE. I just want to know the following items.

    1. If I configure Protection group for my exchange mailbox (all three storage groups). Will it commit logs in EDB. In my Testing its not.

    2. Lets say If any log file is deleted/corrupted and DB is dismounted due to dirty shutdown. Then how to fix using DPM 2010.

    3. Why its throwing "replica is inconsistent" after recovery? Is this expected after recovery in Exchange?

    4. Can you link me to best practices for DPM backup/restoration.

  • 1. DPM will truncate the logfiles during each sync or if you dont have sync then it will be when you do full backup.

    2. You restore a previous backup.

    3. When the DPM will not run the backup then the replica will be inconsistent until DPM run consistency check. If no update (backup) will run on the replica then it will stay inconsistent. In your case the Exchange need to circulate the log files so that the backup will run.

  • Hi Laith,

Great to see immediate replies. Now I have some doubts regarding the point no. 3. (Why its throwing "replica is inconsistent" after recovery? Is this expected after recovery in Exchange?)

I tried many times and found that, when I restore the Restore point, its successfully restored but in Protection tab it shows "replica is inconsistent". Still I have question why its showing "replica is inconsistent". When backup was restore successfully then why "replica is inconsistent". Yes I noticed that when I click on check consistency, its changed in to OK with green button.

What consistency is checked during this period. I selected check consistency when there is  inconsistency button then why I need to check manually. Can't we automate it?

  • DPM act like below:-

Take the full backup (replica) store it. Then run consistency check to update the replica and upload the different.

If these changes will not update the replica then the replica will be inconsistent. In your case when you are protecting the Exchange server, Each sync is transfering the data change from the Exchange to the DPM server. and the Express backup will combine all these changes and update the replica and store it as a full backup so you will be able to restore your exchange from this recovery point. Thats why if no recovery points were created neither any sync were performed successfully then you will see the replica is inconsistent.

    Hope that helps,

    Laith.

  • Hi My question is still there.

Why my DPM server is showing replica inconsistency error after restoration of storage group. I want that after restoration, there should not be any error. E ven i copid eseutil.exe and ese.dll inside DPM's bin folder for auto-consistency check.
