Neighbour solicitation on node restart RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I know when reboot a node it produces Neighbor Solicitation message with target address as node's link local address.

But, why it again produces same with Global address as target address?

Thanks in advance for your attention to this query.

  • One of the purposes of neighboar solicitation is for autoconfiguration of IPv6 addresses.

When a node selects an IPv6 address for itself, be it link-local or global, it has to first check whether this address is already taken in the local subnet. This check is performed by sending a neighbor solicitation message with the address, and if no one answers then the address can be used by the node.

You are seeing these 2 queries because the node needs to autoconfigure for itself both a link local address and a global address.
