KB4016635 Breaks Start Menu

    Question

  • Hi, This update broke the start menu on quite a lot of our machines, we have ended up reimaging, not good!!!

I tried loads of fixes from online, but nothing worked.... The start menu wouldn't load and it would seem the settings app was missing... any ideas?

  • If you are running Windows 10 Anniversary Update then open PowerShell as Admin and type the following command:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

  • Hi John555444,

Did the issue occur only on specific machines or all the machine? Have you tried different accounts on the problematic machine? Have you deployed roaming profile? Have you got any error messages or are there any error messages recorded in the Event Viewer(Windows Logs\Applications, Applications and Services\Microsoft\Windows\Apps)?

Please try to register the store apps with the command as S.Sengupta suggested.
Refer to the following link to check the permission, the theory should be applied to Windows 10, too.
Windows 8.1 Store Apps Won’t Open (Or Close Immediately) when logged on as a domain user. Make it stop! (Updated 3/14/2015)

  • Hi,

Have checked through this and all seems correct.

As per above have tried the store app fix, but didn't help, could it be because our windows store is blocked?

    Kind Regards,

    John

  • Hi,

Only errors we could find before rebuilding were from the start menu troubleshooter:

"Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost" and "Microsoft.Windows.Cortana" applications need to be installed correctly.

However all the PS scripts we found online to reinstall the apps etc didn't fix it.

  • Hi John555444,

    Have you deployed roaming profile?

Did the issue occur only on specific machines or all of the machines? Have you tried different accounts on the problematic machine(local account)?

Please share us more details of the issue, it will be very useful to narrow down the issue.

If the issue only occurred with the specific machines and all the users, we may consider to perform an in-place upgrade repair.

    Best regards

  • Hi,

This seems to be happening on the April update too. It seems if the pc is shutdown or restarted either via script of power button the update breaks the start menu shell and cortana... If we login to each machine and restart it the update is fine.

We have done this on all our Win 10 machines but we currently have approx 150 win 10 machines so it is fairly time consuming when we should just be able to leave windows update and wsus to do its thing...

  • No possible fix for this?
