Need localhost Redirect in Windows XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need localhost to redirect to another IP address in Windows XP. I have edited the HOSTS file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc but when I ping localhost in command prompt it always redirects to 127.0.0.1 . It accepts redirects for anything I enter as long as it's not localhost (e.g. I can put a line with localhost2 and it will ping the address correctly in command prompt.)  I understand how to add the entry (like 8.8.8.8 localhost -but I'm using a different IP I don't want to disclose.)

Weird thing is I've tested this on Windows 7 and it works fine. It seems to be a limitation in XP and does anyone know a way around it?

I know it's a weird request but I need to get this done for a certain software program.
