Irritation in conceptuality of Windows Updates

Question

Hi together,
unfortunately it exists in the conceptuality related to Windows Security Updates irritations.
We use WSUS in our company to public Windows Security Updates. After the new Microsoft Windows Update stragey since October 2016, there is a big irritation in conceptuality related to Windows Security Updates. Microsoft defines mainly 3 security updates forms:
1) Security Only Quality Updates
2) Security Monthly Quality Rollup
3) Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup
The 3rd is not interesting for us.
Please sort the following up-to-date security updates (March 2017) related to new strategy (above)! I have a big problem with the correct category:
A) "Security Update for Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems (KB4012598)" 14.03.2017
B) "March, 2017 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 (KB4012214)" 14.03.2017
C) "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows Server 2012 (KB4012204)" 14.03.2017
D) "March, 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4012215)" 14.03.2017
E) "Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows Server 2016 (for x64-based Systems) (KB4014329)" 14.03.2017
B and D ist clear for me, but how about with A, C, E?
And how about with the titels "Important Update......", "Cumulative update......", "Critical update....."? How can see in WSUS whether such kind of update belong to "Security Only Quality Updates" OR "Security Monthly Quality Rollup"?
I miss a detailed Microsoft manual about changed update strategy!
Best Regards
Birdal

Hi _Birdal,
Windows Server 2012 update history (B in this link "Security-only")
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/22811/windows-server-2012-update-history
Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 update history (D in this link "monthly rollup")
Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 update history
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/24717/windows-8-1-and-windows-server-2012-r2-update-history
Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 update history
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4000825/windows-10-windows-server-2016-update-history
1. B is security-only rollup for server 2012, D is monthly rollup for server 2008R2 SP1. They are all new servicing model updates after October 2016. While they are for different system.
For same system update rollups, security-only rollup is included in monthly rollup, later monthly rollup includes all pervious monthly rollups;
2. Both Security-only rollup and Monthly rollup are related about security updates which fix system security issues; C and E are security updates for Microsoft Products which may not be included in security-only rollup or monthly rollup;
3. The new servicing mode is not for 2008, so the security update for server 2008 is still as before, like A.

Anne

Hi Anne,
thank you for your feedback.
As I wrote B and D is clear for me.
You wrote "C and E are security updates for Microsoft Products which may not be included in security-only rollup or monthly rollup..."
Microsoft developed the new security update strategy, but there are still many exceptions, like C and E! Why do the customers need a "new" strategy if a mismatch concept still exists?
Sorry, but the answers and strategy are not satisfactory, especially for enterprise customers!

Hi _Birdal,
As far as I'm concerned, the security rollups are mostly for the windows system which is widely needed.
While C and E are for Microsoft products, for example, not all customers will install "Adobe Flash Player" or "IE 10" on their system, so these updates only for the clients install the products.
Best Regards,
Anne

Hi _Birdal,
Please check the following blog:
"Starting with February 2017, the Security Only update will not include updates for Internet Explorer, and the Internet Explorer update will again be available as a separate update for the operating systems listed
above."“The Monthly Rollup will continue to include updates for Internet Explorer”
