The best practices question is a little big and I'll leave that to someone else to answer. However, you can definitely do a backup/restore within the same domain and you won't be violating any best practices doing it.

thanks
you mean to say that i can install another server farm(test) in the same domain and restore the backup from the production ?
is that correct ?

Indeed you can. Make sure that any previous attempts have been deleted though as if an item with a GUID matching anything within your back-up is detected, it won't restore.

thanks steven
I have just installed sharepoint 2007 in a test server (not created any site ) . and i have backup using both stsadm utility and sqlbackup from the production server
How do i begin the restore the backup from the production to test which i have installed without altering anything on the production server
Just restoring the sql backup is not enough ?
Thanks
