Fax Service keeps stopping immediately after starting RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows Server 2008 Standard

I've only got two roles installed - Fax Service and Print Services.  I've got the Fax service and the Print Spooler service set to automatic.  Upon bootup, I keep getting these event log entries:

The Fax service entered the Running State

    then

The Server service entered the Running State

    then

The Fax service entered the Stopped state

All of the entries are at the same time.

    Any ideas?

  • It turns out that somehow my fax modems had lost the auto receive setting, and that was causing the fax service to not be able to start.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the post. The possible cause of fax service crash issue may be various. It is hard to troubleshot the issue only from the symptom. Currently, I can only suggest you to apply the following hotfixes to update the fax related files to the latest version then check if the issue could be resolved.

The fax service intermittently crashes on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2008 R2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2302075

The Fax Service crashes when a fax server receives a fax on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973640

A fax application that uses the Fax service client APIs may crash randomly on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2545985/en-gb

After applying these hotfixes, if the issue still persists, please kindly upload the System log, Application log and System information to the Workspace that I setup for you for further analysis:
