what is the default maximum number of co-authoring authors for Word and PowerPoint? RRS feed

  • The software Boundaries and Limits document from MS http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787.aspx shows that the recommended maximum of concurrent editors is 10. The boundary limit (I.e. what cannot be exceeded) is 99. There is no upper limit on OneNote authors.

The document highlights that once you have more than 10 users co-authoring a file then the user experience will degrade as the liklihood of conflicts rises with each additional Author.

Obviously if your document is 300 pages long, then you would be less likely to have edit conflicts than if it was 3 pages long.

The hard boundary of 99 cannot be configured past, the 100th author will receive a file in use error and have to open the file as Read only.

  • Hi Jonj,

As per my understating, There is no default limit for co-authoring authors for Word and PowerPoint.

You can set configure the co-authoring version period and maximum number of co-authoring authors using power shell script or  setting.

    Best Regards,

  • I used the following PowerShell code to learn about the max on my new SharePoint 2013 farm. It was 99 by default.

    $siteurl="http://oooooo"

    $mysite=new-object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSite($siteurl)

    write-host $mysite.WebApplication.WebService.CoauthoringMaxAuthors
