Research pane in Word 2016 does nothing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Added Research pane option to Quick Access Toolbar.  Button is enabled but nothing happens when I click on it.  Nothing brings up research pane.  Tried adding as button to ribbon and Alt+Click, and Ctrl+Shift+O

  • There are 2 Research commands available in All Commands when customizing the QAT. The first is called Research..., the other is called research, followed by a dropdown icon. I found the first command (with the ellipsis) brought up the Research pane with no problem.

The QAT has automatic keyboard shortcuts. If the Research command is the 5 icon in the QAT, Alt + 5 will run it. See if that works any better. If you still have no luck, please try an Office repair: Repair an Office application

  • Thanks for your input.  Actually tried both Research option in customized QAT.  No luck.  Something is blocking the feature; button is enabled.  Ctrl+Shift+O should bring up the task pane regardless.

    Thanks!!

  • Hi,

Please run Word in safe mode (Type "winword /safe" in Run dialog, click OK), check whether the short cut Ctrl+Shift+O could open Research Pane.

Besides, download the fix tool to try to reset user options and registry settings in Word.

When nothing helps, could you please change another version of Office to check this issue?

I would also like to suggest you create a new administrator account.

Any updates please share with us.

  • Ctrl+shift+O in safe mode did not work.  Already tried installing another Word version; did not work.

Created a new profile for me and it worked. The downside is that it would force me to move everything I have over to the new profile which I am still considering.

    Thanks for your time

  • Hi,

I understand the trouble which is along with the new user profile.

As this issue also occurs with different versions of Office, I think this issue is more related to your environment.

Apart from using a new profile, you may try to perform a clean boot to prevent other programs interfering with Word application.

    Regards,

    Emily
