XP - To VISTA BASIC UPGRADE.........oops bye files, bye pictures.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just upgraded my Dell inspiron E1705 from XE to Vista home basic.

The Teckies at Best buy said it would not delete my old files and pictures, well guess why I'm here?

Not only did it delete the old pictures and files, but he programs as well.

Tell me this is not so, Tell me there is a chance that these files are somewhere hidden deep within the bowels of Vista.

    Cheers

  • Hi Derek,

Did you perform an Upgrade Install or Clean Install?

If you formatted the drive before installing Vista, we cannot recover your files and programs.

Otherwise, we can find your old files and programs using the following methods.

If this was a clean install, the following folders were moved to %systemdrive%\Windows.OLD. (For example, if your system drive is C:, then you can find the folders in C:\Windows.old)

    Windows

    Document and Settings

    Program Files

If this was an upgrade install, the following folders were moved to %systemdrive%\$Windows.~Q\ and %systemdrive%\$INPLACE.~TR\Machine\DATA. (For example, if your system drive is C:, then you can find the folders in C:\$Windows.~Q\ and C:\$INPLACE.~TR\Machine\DATA)

    Windows

    Document and Settings

    Program Files

Can you find your files and programs now?
