Vista Ult to Win7 Ult upgrade failer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have been trying to upgrade some PCs from Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate and the PCs in question pass all the compatibility tests on the Upgrade Advisor and informs me that I am ready to upgrade to Win7 32-bit.

I go ahead with the upgrade, all goes fine, gets to the last 1/4 of the upgrade where it reboots for the second time, as it starts up again the BSOD flashes up, not long enough to see what the error is, and then a message is displayed saying "upgrade was not succesful, returning to your previous version"

Has anyone else had similar problems? If so what was done to resolve it?

    Thanks,

    Monty

  • Search for:

    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err  and setupact.log.

Those may give you a clue to the culprit.

    Search Microsoft KB 928901

usually you need to completely uninstall any anti-virus software and third party back-up and disk tools before an upgrade.

yes. If you search TechNet, in-place upgrades encountered many issues. No one solution as the solution depends on what you have installed or changed on your system.
