DHCP: Multiple DNS Update Failed (Dynamic DNS Update is disabled)

    Question

  • I work at an University and we are getting millions of errors in DHCP log. Like this one:

    31,06/06/18,15:42:18,DNS Update Failed,10.2.44.217,iPhone,,,0,6,,,,,,,,,2

The problem is that DNS Dynamic updates are disabled for this scope.

We have 14 scopes that serve about 15.000 users/day for our wireless network. All of them are configured alike, but two of them are presenting the error above. Why are the DHCP trying to register DNS names if Dynamic DNS update is disabled?

I tried enabling DNS dynamic updates and it decreases the volume of errors, but we do not want Wireless clients in our DNS (those two scopes serve ~3000 users).

In 16 hours, there was 1311978 errors for the above scope and 734292 for the other one. The other 12 scopes didn't had a single error.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

Please try the following suggestions to see if it could be of help.

1.Please check the configuration of DHCP scopes again and ensure Dynamic DNS Update is turned off.

2.Release and renew IP addresses of computers or make mobile devices regain IP addresses. Clear the event logs to see if there are any errors.

3.If you use a DHCP relay agent, consider the impact of third-party devices.

4.Capture packets on the DNS server and check the contents of the network packet to find possible problem information.

Hope you have a nice day!

    Best regards,

    Travis
