100 percent cpu between wsstracing.exe and mssdmn.exe - WSS 3.0 RRS feed

  • Question

  • WSS 3.0 SP1, Server 2003 Standard SP2, 32 bit.   We searched the forums and found others listing the below hotfixes which have the following sections about cpu usage that may apply.  (see below) Since we are unsure which one specifically applies to us we stopped short of applying them.   Stopping the Office Sharepoint Search Service reduce the CPU to 25%, which was now being consumed by wsstracing.exe   What are your thoughts?

A full crawl to crawl .pdf files may stop unexpectedly when an .ocn file is embedded in a .pdf file

When a full crawl is performed to crawl .pdf files in a SharePoint Server 2007 site collection, the crawl may stop unexpectedly. Additionally, CPU usage may increase to 100 percent. This issue may occur when an .ocn file is embedded in a .pdf file.

    •Consider the following scenario:

On a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site that is connected to SharePoint Server 2007, you enable the Windows Rights Management Services function for a document library.

◦You upload a Microsoft Word document to the document library.

◦You try to open the Word document from the library.

In this scenario, Word may not open. Additionally, SharePoint Server 2007 may experience 100% CPU usage.

  • Hi edogwv,

If the case is an.ocn file is embedded in a .paf file, you can check your log(C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\LOGS). If there is no log about it, you can sure it is the second issue.

    Thanks,
