Problem running Quake in XP SP3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I know the game is old, but anyway, I installed the game fine and followed the useual advice for this game by running in Compatibility mode by selecting Windows 95 but instead I get an error when trying to run it, which is:

    Windirect error:

    Unable to link to KERNEL32.DLL

    MGL fatal error:

    Cannot load WDIRxxF.dll

    So anyone any ideas?

That's a very old game, I would say try either:

    1. GLQuake http://www.fileplanet.com/86880/80000/fileinfo/GLQuake or
    2. WinQuake http://www.bluesnews.com/guide/winquake.htm

Not sure if they are free or if you have to pay for them though.

  • I think you need to run the file in "Separate memory space" To do that you need to read on it a litle bit. Below there is a link with some instructions.
Also in the proprieties of the executable should be available to run a file in separate memory space.

    http://www.tweaklibrary.com/System/64/Show-%E2%80%9CRun-in-Separate-Memory-Space%E2%80%9D-option-(For-Current-User)/11215

    also try this command:
    start /separate c:\pathtoapp\application.exe

    Other things to try.

If you have a lot of stuff in start up try disabling most of it with msconfig.
try also a new profile, completely clean.

  • Thanks for the suggestions even though there 1 odd year later though, but anyway I can't try them now due to the fact I no longer have XP because I'm using Windows 7 now, but I'll keep them in mind just encase it doesn't run in 7.

  • Hi I strongly suspect this is related to the same problem I've found a work around for a different game with this same error.

WDIR62F.DLL specifically uses Kernel32.GetProcAddress() to try to access a function called "QT_Thunk" which was removed from laster versions.

I was able to get a similar game to still start up (but not go into full screen mode):

See my fix on github username: WesUnwin, in a repo called: coldshdw_patch

Cant directly give you a link, sorry.

This likely won't directly work on Quake but probably a extremely similar work around could be used.

    Hope this helps!
