SCCM 2007 R3 or SCCM 2011? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're currently running SMS 2003 w/SP3 and are looking to deploy SCCM 2007 R3 as a Hyper-V instance (providing there are no show stoppers and it's released in the third/fourth quarter) later this year in combination with an enterprise wide server refresh.  A question I have is considering we wouldn't complete our deployment of SCCM 2007 R3 until very late in 2010 would it make sense to wait until SCCM 2011 is released?  This hinges on when SCCM 2011 will be released.  I'm hoping/thinking it will be released (possibly) in the first quarter (Beta 1 was released a few days ago which is very encouraging).  I'm asking this because of the large number of changes in SCCM 2011 when compared to SCCM 2007.

Experienced SCCM 2007 and SCCM 2011 users thoughts?

  • Actual release of v.Next hasn't been stated as anything more granular than 2011. Being smart about deploying ConfigMgr based on release dates is prudent, but given this broad timeline for release, I wouldn't base any decision on it.

Do you have other driving factors in your organization like Win 7 deployment or anything else that would require functionality in ConfigMgr? IMO, those should drive your adoption of ConfigMgr 07 or waiting for v.Next. One other factor to also consider is that SMS 2003 is in it's extended support phase meaning that getting direct support from Microsoft with cost you extra.
